How does hypnosis work?
What exactly happens during hypnosis? And what can you use it for? In this blog I share the information from the website of the professional association NBVH (Dutch Professional Association for Hypnotherapists) to which I am a member.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a treatment method for complaints of a psychological and psychosomatic nature. The use of trance (or hypnosis) is the core of this therapy. The hypnotherapist also uses other evidence-based forms of therapy. This means that its effect has been demonstrated in scientific research.

How does Hypnotherapy work?
In hypnotherapy, hypnosis is used therapeutically. A hypnotic state (trance) is deliberately induced as a therapeutic agent. Unlike what happens during theater hypnosis, you always maintain control over yourself. In this therapy you learn to listen to yourself in a different way than you are used to. This brings you closer to your unconscious feelings and beliefs. This creates new insights that you can apply in your own way in daily life to achieve your goals.

How does a Hypnotherapist work?
An intake interview first takes place during which the client provides the therapist with all information important for the therapy. Based on the client's request for help, an objective for the treatment is determined and the approach is discussed. If desired, the therapist can work with a treatment agreement that sets out the conditions for the collaboration, the rates, possibly the objectives and an estimate of the number of sessions.
We assume that a client, in case of physical complaints, has consulted a doctor before the hypnotherapy starts. Hypnotherapists are always willing to consult with the treating physician. This consultation will of course only take place with the client's approval. The hypnotherapist is bound by a duty of confidentiality, so all information is treated confidentially.

What can I do with a Hypnotherapist?
Many complaints are reduced or resolved with hypnotherapy. Because every person is unique and every complaint or request for help is different, it would be careless to state here that certain complaints can be resolved with hypnotherapy. Because experienced hypnotherapists have achieved good results with their clients with these techniques and through scientific research into the effects of treatment with hypnosis, we can conclude that many complaints are suitable for treatment with hypnotherapy. Treatment by doctors and medical specialists remains of great importance for many diseases. In support of this, hypnotherapy offers support, insight into one's own actions and qualities, reduction of or better coping with the complaints and being free of complaints in some complaints or problems.
Below is a selection from the list of complaints that have been shown in practice to be usefully treated with hypnotherapy:
o Unlearning unwanted behavior
o Fears, phobias
o Burnout
o Concentration and memory problems
o Depressive feelings
o Emotional outbursts
o Gain insight into your own possibilities
o Nervousness and tension
o Pain complaints
o Psychosomatic complaints, such as stomach and intestinal complaints, IBS, hyperventilation, tinnitus
o Sexual problems
o Sleep problems
o Stress
o Training skills
o Trauma processing
o Strengthening and/or supporting a healing process

Who is hypnotherapy suitable for?
Hypnotherapy can be used very well for both adults and children. There are therapists affiliated with the NBVH who have specialized in working with children. However, hypnotherapy is not suitable for some conditions. Very serious psychiatric conditions are a contraindication to working with hypnosis.

Is hypnotherapy reimbursed?
Hypnotherapy is in many cases reimbursed by your health insurer through supplementary insurance.
As of January 1, 2017, therapists must meet an additional requirement from insurers to be eligible for reimbursement. A number of our members have chosen not to meet this requirement: they have been trained in accordance with the other requirements of the NBVH and are often very experienced.
You can search for reimbursed therapists in Find Therapist . If this is not important to you because, for example, you do not have additional insurance, you can search for both reimbursed and non-reimbursed therapists.
Via the links below you will find a current overview of the reimbursements by the various health insurers. Please pay close attention to the stated conditions.
What qualifications does an NBVH hypnotherapist have?
The members of the NBVH have a vocational education at a minimum HBO level. In addition to training requirements, the NBVH sets requirements for its members in terms of knowledge, skills and client focus. Only therapists who meet these requirements are admitted as members. Annual further training and peer consultation are conditions for remaining a member. Each member receives a renewed license annually when these conditions are met. If you choose a therapist registered by the NBVH, you choose guidance with a high level of quality. A hypnotherapist affiliated with us can be recognized by the NBVH wall shield and the license for the relevant calendar year.
